Serving suggestions

Best eaten fresh — the avocado doesn't love sitting, so this isn't a make-ahead pot. Warm tortillas or tortilla chips turn it into a light taco-bar situation; a little cotija or a dollop of crema suits it.

Substitutions & tips

Use good oil-packed or albacore tuna; the quality shows. For the smoked angle the name promises, a few ounces of flaked smoked tuna or trout folded in with the canned adds a genuine smoky note. Salmon works too.

Ingredients
3 cans good-quality albacore tuna, drained
1 ripe avocado, diced
1 can black beans
14 oz fire-roasted tomatoes
1 jalapeño, minced
2 garlic cloves
1 tsp cumin
1/2 tsp chili powder
Lime juice and cilantro
Steps
1
Sauté garlic and jalapeño in olive oil 2 minutes
2
Add cumin and chili powder, stir 30 seconds
3
Pour in fire-roasted tomatoes and black beans
4
Simmer 10 minutes until slightly thickened
5
Fold in tuna gently, breaking into large chunks
6
Remove from heat and gently fold in diced avocado
7
Finish with lime juice and cilantro
